Smiling in photos is completely overrated. Who decided smiling was mandatory, anyway?

We’ve all been programmed to do it. From those awkward school picture days to the endless “say cheese!” situations at family gatherings. Somewhere along the line, smiling became the default setting for every photo, no matter how we actually felt.

It ends up being kinda cringy, because most people can spot a fake smile a mile off, and genuinely, not every great photo needs a grin.

As photographers, we learn thousand prompts to help coax out a “natural” smile. But, sometimes the best shot is the one where we don’t try so hard. The quiet confidence. The calm intensity. The “I mean business” look on your face.
What I am trying to say is, sometimes I think a good old-fashioned resting bitch face can be totally boss, don't you? It’s kinda like the visual equivalent of a cliffhanger: you want to know more.

So here’s Meg, owning her space, relaxed yet serious, reminding us that expression doesn’t have to mean “cheese.” Sometimes it means power.

This shoot wasn’t planned. It just kind of happened between rain clouds and real life. 📸

I try to make time for personal creative projects whenever I can. They're a great way to test new gear, lighting setups, and editing techniques, without the pressure of deadlines or clients.
Between tricky weather and scheduling, we only had about half an hour, but we made the most of the autumn vibe, a lantern, and a few fake crows 🍂. I added a touch of Photoshop magic later to give the scene that whimsical, slightly eerie forest feel.

Alora was an absolute trooper. A little cold, with a strapped knee from a trampoline park mishap, but still full of character.

Creativity doesn't always have to be about having hours to plan. I’m also trying to be less of a perfectionist and give myself permission to make use of the little windows I have, and see what magic comes from them.
